Where to Stay in Seoul: Myeongdong, Hongdae, Jongno or Gangnam?
By roosterboy · Planning information checked October 4, 2026
Choosing a Seoul hotel starts with a simple question: where will you want to be at the end of the day? A famous neighborhood name cannot tell you whether your room is convenient for your own plans. Compare these four areas by the places you want to visit, then check the exact building before booking.

Choose by the shape of your days
- Myeongdong: shopping and a central sightseeing base
- Hongdae: a base around your evening plans
- Jongno: historic streets and cultural stops
- Gangnam: useful when your itinerary gives it a purpose
Before comparing rooms, save three places you most want to visit. Add one likely dinner stop and your arrival point. A hotel that works for those locations is more useful than a neighborhood that appears in every recommendation.
Myeongdong for shopping between sightseeing days
Myeongdong is a major shopping area. The official Seoul shopping guide describes a district that also serves commercial and cultural roles. Choose it if browsing shops is something you want to fit around your sightseeing, rather than reserve for one separate excursion.
For a short trip, test a prospective hotel against your palace day and your Namsan day. A central-looking map pin is only the beginning: open walking directions to the actual entrance, check the road crossings, and look for recent guest comments about returning at night. Do not assume every property advertised as Myeongdong has the same station access.
It can also help to plan heavier shopping near the end of an outing. If your room is convenient for the shops you actually want to visit, you can judge whether a return to drop bags is worthwhile. Our beauty shopping checklist helps keep that shopping list manageable.
Booking question: Can you get from your likely evening stop to the hotel without an inconvenient final walk?
Hongdae when your evenings are part of the plan
Consider Hongdae if you have already saved restaurants, shops or evening stops in this part of Seoul. Use those specific places to judge location. A hotel near one of your saved venues may suit you better than a property described simply as being in the wider Hongdae area.
If you are a light sleeper, check reviews for the exact room category and ask whether rooms face a busy street. A lively district and a restful bedroom can coexist, but the neighborhood name does not establish soundproofing. If you intend to spend most days elsewhere, compare the full door-to-door journeys before making evening convenience your deciding factor.
For arrival day, check the route with luggage to the hotel entrance, including the station exit. A short distance on a map can conceal stairs, crossings or a less convenient approach. Save the property’s Korean address and late-arrival instructions before your flight.
Booking question: Does the address fit your real evening plans, and can the property answer your noise concerns?
Jongno for a trip shaped by historic Seoul
Start your search around the parts of Jongno you plan to explore. Insadong offers galleries, traditional craft shops and tea houses, according to Visit Seoul. That makes this area worth considering if those stops matter more to you than returning to a large shopping district each night.

Jongno covers different settings, so do not treat an Insadong address and a Seochon address as interchangeable. For our three-day Seoul itinerary, mark the first day’s palace district stops and compare a hotel’s position against them. Read our Seochon guide if that neighborhood is on your list.
For a traditional-style stay, ask practical questions about bed type, bathroom privacy, stairs and luggage storage. Photographs of a courtyard do not establish the room facilities. Treat nearby residential lanes as people’s homes, including when arriving late or arranging a pickup.
Booking question: Which part of Jongno are you actually choosing, and what is the route from the station to the door?
Gangnam when your itinerary gives it a purpose
If your trip includes a convention or repeated visits to COEX, check nearby accommodation first. Visit Seoul’s COEX listing places the venue in Gangnam-gu. Use the event entrance or meeting address as your reference point rather than assuming any hotel labeled Gangnam is adjacent.
A Gangnam base can make sense when the places you will return to are there. For a palace-heavy holiday, compare journeys to the northern part of Seoul before booking. Decide from your route, not from a neighborhood’s reputation or a single attractive hotel photograph.
Booking question: What specific destination makes staying here useful on more than one day?
A hotel shortlist you can actually compare
Choose two candidate areas and shortlist one or two properties in each. For every property, record the same details:
- The full stay price for your dates, including stated taxes and fees.
- The cancellation deadline, payment terms and exact room type.
- The entrance address and a walking route from your likely transport stop.
- Lift access, steps and bathroom arrangements if these affect your comfort.
- Check-in arrangements if your flight arrives late.
- Recent guest feedback about cleanliness, noise and the room category you intend to book.
Then compare three journeys: arrival with luggage, the first morning’s outing and the return after your longest day. These reveal more than a hotel’s straight-line distance from a landmark. If two properties are close in price, choose the one that removes the inconvenience you are least willing to tolerate.
Should you split your stay?
You do not need to change hotels just to experience another neighborhood. For a short stay, weigh the benefit of moving against checkout, luggage storage and the next check-in. Keep one base when it works for your route. Consider a change only when it solves a specific problem, such as several days of commitments in a different area.
Do not assume one neighborhood will always be cheapest. Compare the same dates, cancellation terms and room requirements. An attractive nightly rate is not the full comparison if the alternative includes something you would otherwise pay for.
