Seoul Transport for First-Time Visitors

By roosterboy · September 6, 2026

Your first journey in Seoul starts before the ticket gate: with the address you are trying to reach. Save your accommodation’s full address, check the route from your arrival terminal, and keep a copy you can access without mobile data. A familiar station name is useful, but the final walk with luggage matters too.

Start with your actual journeys

Write down three routes: airport to accommodation, accommodation to your first day’s main stop, and the return journey. Compare transfers and walking distance as well as the displayed travel time. A slightly longer direct journey may be easier when you have bags or are tired after a flight.

Build the plan around your arrival time. If a delay would make your intended service unavailable, save a backup before departure. Confirm current operating hours with the transport operator; this guide does not provide a fixed last-train time.

Understand what a transport card does

VISITKOREA lists Tmoney and EZL among Korea’s reloadable transport cards and explains that they can be purchased and loaded at convenience stores. It also describes tourist pass options, including the Seoul Climate Card, with different coverage and validity rules. Read the official transport-card comparison before choosing.

Do not choose a pass only because it says “unlimited.” Check whether the routes you will actually use are included, when validity begins, and whether your airport journey is covered. Compare the card purchase cost and pass cost against a realistic number of journeys, including days when you expect to walk.

A simple station routine

  1. Confirm the destination and direction before entering.
  2. Keep your payment card accessible and follow the instructions at the gates or reader.
  3. Check the next connection before leaving the platform.
  4. Look up the useful exit for your destination before walking out.

Allow room for people to leave a train before boarding and keep luggage close to you. If you need a step-free route, check the station’s lift information rather than assuming every exit is suitable.

Keep the first day light

After checking in, make a short local journey before committing to a complex cross-city itinerary. Locate a convenient station, find somewhere easy to eat, and test the route back. That small rehearsal can make the following morning much calmer.

Planning checklist: address saved, arrival route checked, backup prepared, card terms compared, and some time left for delays.
