Korea SIM or eSIM? A Checklist Before You Buy
By roosterboy · Prepared October 16, 2026
Before comparing data allowances, decide what your phone needs to do in Korea. Looking up a station exit is different from calling a restaurant, receiving a booking message or keeping your home number available. The right product is the one that supports those tasks on your exact device.

Start with the device, not the deal
Check the exact model and regional version with the provider before paying. A phone advertising eSIM support does not automatically mean every travel eSIM will work on it. LG U+ requires an unlocked compatible phone and lists device exclusions on its official eSIM page. Ask your home carrier about any lock before departure.
If compatibility is uncertain, save the provider’s answer rather than relying on a friend’s experience with a similarly named phone. Also check whether your device can keep the lines you need active together. Do this while you still have a dependable connection and time to resolve a problem.
Match the product to your actual tasks
| Your priority | Check with the provider |
|---|---|
| Maps and messaging apps | Data allowance, validity and supported device |
| Calling a local business | Outgoing voice support and call credit |
| Receiving booking messages | Incoming SMS and the specific app’s requirements |
| Using a laptop | Whether tethering is included and any separate limit |
| Keeping your home number | Dual-line behavior and your home carrier’s charges |
LG U+ distinguishes Data Only from Data + Voice: the former does not include outgoing calls or texts. Its guidance also distinguishes reservation-app SMS verification from identity verification for banking or government services. Do not buy a tourist number on the assumption that it unlocks every Korean service. Confirm the particular booking workflow you need.
KT’s official eSIM information directs travelers needing outgoing calls and texts to its airport roaming center for prepaid eSIM products and says voice/SMS requires an entry check there. Product-specific procedures matter more than a generic “eSIM” label.
Separate purchase, installation and activation
These may be different moments. LG U+ currently says its data eSIM must be activated within 60 days of purchase and that plan validity starts with first data use. It also states that data eSIM purchases are non-refundable and an installed eSIM cannot be reissued. Read the terms for the exact product you select; do not assume another provider follows the same rules.
Keep your confirmation, installation instructions and support details accessible without depending on the new connection. Before installing, work out how you will display or import the QR code on your device. Follow the provider’s steps rather than improvising settings based on a different product’s tutorial.
Compare the whole trip, not a headline daily price
Write down your arrival and departure times, then check that the validity covers the last journey to the airport. Compare the final checkout total for that period. Note whether voice credit, an extension or a pickup requirement changes the cost. We do not list a universal cheapest option because device compatibility and required features can rule out a low-priced plan.
A short table in your trip notes is enough: provider, exact product, total cost, start rule, expiry, calls/SMS, tethering and support route. Mark anything unanswered before buying. Add the final amount to your Seoul travel budget.
Test before starting the airport journey
- Follow the provider’s setup instructions and select the intended data line.
- Check your home carrier’s roaming settings and charges separately.
- Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and load a route or webpage to test mobile data.
- If calling or texting is essential, verify that feature too.
- If setup fails, keep the installed profile and contact support before deleting it.
Save your hotel address and airport transfer plan offline as a fallback. A working connection is useful; having a simple arrival plan that survives a temporary connection problem is better preparation. Continue with Plan Your Trip.
