Korean Beauty Shopping: A Before-You-Buy Checklist
By roosterboy · September 6, 2026
Beauty shopping is easier when you arrive with a short list. Write down what you actually need, what you already use, and the maximum space you want purchases to take in your luggage. Treat the list as a way to make decisions, not an obligation to buy everything on it.
Compare the product, not the display
Read the full product name, size, and variant. Similar packaging can make two different items look interchangeable. Compare the price per item or per unit of volume, especially when a promotion bundles several sizes together. A large bundle only saves money if you will use or give away its contents.
Keep a photo or note of the items you are comparing so you do not buy the same thing twice at different stops. If an offer has conditions, ask staff to explain them before checkout.
Make practical checks
- Check that the packaging is intact and the item matches the label you intended to buy.
- Review expiry or use-by information and storage instructions where provided.
- Read the ingredient list for ingredients you already know you avoid.
- Ask about returns before opening the packaging.
- Check your airline’s baggage and liquid rules before deciding what goes in hand luggage.
This is a shopping checklist, not a recommendation to change your skincare routine. A popular item is not automatically a good match for your needs. You do not need to buy a full routine simply because products are displayed together.
Keep tax-refund paperwork organized
Duty-free shopping and a tax refund on a retail purchase are different arrangements. Eligibility, participating stores, transaction limits, and departure procedures matter. Consult VISITKOREA’s official tax-refund guide and ask the store which process applies before paying.
Keep the receipt and any refund paperwork together. Record whether a refund was handled at the store or requires another step, and leave enough time before departure to complete the applicable process. Do not assume every shop or every purchase qualifies.
Do a final basket review
Before checkout, separate the items you came for from the items you added because of a promotion. Check the total in your own budget, including baggage space and the possibility that you will not use a bundle quickly. Putting something back is a successful shopping decision too.
For the wider trip, use our planning checklist. Official information checked September 6, 2026; confirm current refund rules before purchase.
